History and description
The Postgraduate Program in Dentistry (PPD) of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Dentistry and Nursing of the Federal University of Ceará in Masters and PhD level, (Concentration area: Clinical Dentistry) has as objective to form qualified professionals for the exercise of the higher education and actuation in the labor market. In addition, the students develop a critic sight of the reality and the need knowledge for the dental practice based on evidences. Furthermore, this Postgraduate Program aims to build up scientific investigation skills with posterior professional capacitation to identify problems, elaborate hypothesis, plan and execute researches in the area of Clinical Dentistry. Others aims are: to prepare technical and scientific professionals for the achievement of clinical procedures according to technologic advances and to stimulate the critic ability and continued education based on scientific evidences. Additionally, the PPD pursues the formation of human resources of integral form among the activities of teaching, research and extension, aiming for the integration between the graduation and the Postgraduate Program for the strengthening of the Faculty as institution developer of new knowledge in the inserted geographic region. The Postgraduate Program in Dentistry in Master’s level had it accreditation approved by CAPES in 2005. The PPD received concept 4 and it has kept this same assessment in the last triennial evaluations. In 2009, the Program had the doctoral level approved, confirming the scientific maturity of the management of the Postgraduate Program in Dentistry and the UFC. The PPD has a fundamental role in the postgraduate formation in Dentistry of the State Ceará and of Northeast region since it is among the few programs that possess doctoral level in the region. The search for the PPD in the state and northeast region is much accentuated. The prove of this demand is the opening of annual public notices with offer about 25 doctorate and master’s vacancies, always filled. Currently the number of registered contestants in the selection processes is about five times greater than the offered vacancies. The evasion is very low and the PPD has formed more than tens of masters and doctors since the implantation, showing an enormous contribution for the imminent change regarding to professional qualification in the current screening of the labor market of the Brazilian Northeast region.
Since it implantation, the PPD acts in three principle research lines. These are :
- Evaluation of Dental Materials
Objectives:
- To know the physical-chemist and biological properties e of the dental materials.
- To verify the correct indication, handling and performance of the dental materials in the clinics.
- Epidemiology in Dentistry
Objectives:
- To determine the frequency and thee distribution of oral diseases in groups of people or populations.
- To study the historic aspects of the development of the epidemiology as scientific field and it relation with public healthy politics.
- To verify the coefficients and indicators of the principle problems in public health.
- Clinic and applied experimental Therapeutics
Objectives:
- To evaluate and to establish the scientific support for the clinic procedures realized in Dentistry.
