Internationalization in Action: PPGO/UFC Participates in the 1st UNL International Dentistry Congress

Through the Interinstitutional Doctorate Program (DINTER) with the Universidad Nacional de Loja (UNL) in Ecuador, the PPGO-UFC participated in organizing the 1st UNL International Dentistry Congress, a milestone for the internationalization of science, research, and education.
The event was attended by DINTER doctoral students Luis Vélez, Darlen Pérez, Susana González, and Cecilia López, who led the organization, bringing together over 200 registered participants.
The congress featured lectures by faculty from UFC, USP, and UFMG, as well as researchers from countries such as Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Honduras, Venezuela, and Bolivia, in a hybrid and collaborative format.
Among the PPGO-UFC participants, the following stand out:
Professor Dr. Fábio Wildson Gurgel Costa, coordinator of the PPGO-UFC, who gave a lecture on oral health in Ecuador, emphasizing the high mortality rates from malignant neoplasms of the oral cavity in provinces such as Loja.
Professor Dr. Lidiany Karla Azevedo Rodrigues Gerage (PRPPG-UFC), with a theoretical course on the use of ICDAS, an international system for detecting and evaluating dental caries.
Professor Beatriz Neves (UFC – Sobral), who remotely conducted a theoretical and practical assessment of ICDAS with the participants.
Professor Dr. Delane Viana Gondim (PPGO-UFC), who presented two lectures on the application of acupuncture in dental clinics—covering fundamentals, applicability, and practice with live demonstrations.
Doctoral students Farah Orellana and Liova Díaz, in partnership with professors Ana Paula, Fabrício Bitu, Karuza Alves, and Mário Mota, gave a lecture entitled “Diagnostic Experience of Malignant Oral Lesions: From Clinical Presentation to Microscopic Diagnosis.”
Professor Ana Karine Macedo Teixeira (PPGO-UFC), who participated in a roundtable discussion with Professor Deisy Patricia Saraguro Orto (UNL) on “Analysis of Public Health in Ecuador and Brazil.”
Professors Bruno Carvalho de Vasconcelos (UFC) and Murilo Priori Alcalde (USP), in a scientific and academic exchange.
Professor Sérgio Lima Santiago (UFC) and doctoral student Sussan Daniela Salazar (PPGO-UFC), gave a lecture on microinvasive approaches to carious lesions and a discussion on non-carious cervical lesions.
Professor Raniel Fernandes Peixoto (UFC) and Prof. Karen Pintado-Palomino (UFMG), with the discussion “Clinical Considerations for Increasing Vertical Dimension in Dental Wear.”
Furthermore, the congress hosted the 1st Oral Cancer Prevention and Screening Campaign in the province of Loja, coordinated by Prof. Fábio Wildson Gurgel Costa and Prof. Delane Gondim. The event included:
1. Educational guidance with the distribution of leaflets;
2. Instruction on oral hygiene;
3. Extra- and intra-oral examinations performed by UNL faculty and students, with suspected cases referred for biopsy by doctoral student Luis Vélez (DINTER/PPGO-UFC).
The event also featured celebrations with UNL authorities, such as Vice-Rector Prof. Elvia Maricela Zhapa Amay.
With the motto “Universal through the regional” and the commitment to “Educate to Transform,” the PPGO-UFC reaffirms its role in excellence training, internationalization of research, and social responsibility, expanding its impact beyond Brazil’s borders.
